Hydrologic Modelling of Mine Closure Landscapes

HydroClimateSight provides internal access to results from the HydroGeoSphere modelling framework developed by Aquanty in collaboration with the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER). The objective of this work is to evaluate the long-term hydrologic sustainability of post-mining closure landscapes in the Northern Athabasca Oil Sands region.

At the core of the platform is a regional-scale hydrological modelling framework developed to simulate how water moves through future closure landscapes. It integrates information from mine closure plans, climate information, and surface / subsurface datasets to realistically represent the dynamic interactions between surface water and groundwater systems under both historical and projected climate conditions.

Supporting Regulatory Oversight

Designed for multi-disciplinary regulatory and policy specialists, this platform allows users to examine model outputs, including geospatial information, time series, and source water tracking, to understand the implications of different closure scenarios and apply insights to regulatory reviews and long-term water management planning.
